Why the Domaine Desaubins should be your next holiday on Mahé!

We booked our stay at the Domaine Desaubins for my birthday treat. I had an excited feeling about our upcoming stay as we were able to book a bungalow with an outdoor bath which is very luxurious indeed! Looking back, I honestly was not prepared for how incredible the location itself would be.

When we arrived, I placed my bare feet on the property and had this surge of energy move from the soles of my feet up my entire body giving me goosebumps. I felt so overcome with gratitude to be standing where I was. Yes, the villas are absolutely clean, modern, stunning, and are everything you could dream of on a luxury holiday, but to be honest, there is SO much more to experience here. There is magic on the Desaubin estate that cannot be explained, or captured in a picture, it must be experienced. Lena, the owner, is a knowledgeable horticulturalist, she is also extremely generous, kind, and her life stories are so captivating. The estate has been in the family since the 1800s and the original three-story colonial home in which she resides enhances the dreamlike atmosphere of the property. Lena continues to live harmoniously with nature like her family have done for over a century by living an eco and organic conscious lifestyle. The family live self sustainably which is especially enviable at this time in our lives. The land includes so many endemic plants which I had never seen before coming to the Domaine Desaubins. A lot of these special plants are becoming extremely rare to see on the Seychelles, such plants include but are definitely not limited to; black bamboo, vavangue fruit, Seychelles cherry tree, mulberries, bilimbelle, neem, calamondin, mini guavas, egg fruit, fig trees, noni tree, and more – just ask the knowledgeable hostess! The farm has vegetables, herbs as well as livestock, including fowl, geese, turkeys, ducks and chickens, cows, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs as well as decorative peacocks. Our children were enraptured by all of the animals and we made several visits to see them throughout our stay.

I love that Lena’s daughters live on the property and together they create everything with love which is what you truly feel when you are here. Every plant has its place and you can feel the history vibrating through every leaf and petal. The Domaine Desaubin is a place where you feel completely at peace, relaxed and safe. The stunning wooden stilt chalets set against the pool are the perfect place to meditate and relax. The big wooden table on the beach is a place to gather as a family and enjoy a sunset meal. The beach is full of purple cowrie shells to collect and funny little hermit crabs. We found a small rock pool to play in and take in the golden sunset. While sharing the bath with my two little ones may have not been what I had in mind, this place truly blew my mind and, in the end, I wouldn’t change a thing. If you want to experience the BEST the Seychelles has to offer then do not hesitate to book your stay at the Domaine Desaubins.
